About the Rooftop Area Utilization
The rooftop-area requirement tells you how much shadow-free roof space a given solar system needs. It depends on module wattage and physical size, plus a spacing allowance for tilt, walkways, and inter-row shading. A common planning rule is roughly 10 m² (about 100 sq ft) of usable area per kWp.
Formula
Roof area ≈ System size (kWp) × 10 m²/kWp
- System size
- Rated DC capacity (kWp)
- 10 m²/kWp
- Planning rule of thumb incl. spacing (≈100 sq ft/kWp)
Precise: A = (P_sys ÷ P_mod) × A_mod × S
- P_sys
- System size (Wp)
- P_mod
- Module wattage (Wp)
- A_mod
- Physical area of one module (m²)
- S
- Spacing factor: ~1.0 flush-mount, 1.3–1.6 tilted rows
How to calculate it
- 1Pick a module wattage and its physical dimensions (a 550 Wp module is ~2.6 m²).
- 2Compute the number of modules: system Wp ÷ module Wp.
- 3Multiply by the module area for the raw panel footprint.
- 4Apply a spacing factor for tilt and inter-row shading (1.0 for flush pitched roofs, up to ~1.6 for tilted rows on a flat roof).
Worked example
A 5 kWp system with 550 Wp modules needs about 10 modules × 2.6 m² ≈ 26 m² of panel footprint. Flush-mounted on a pitched roof that is roughly the space needed; tilted on a flat roof with row spacing it rises to ~40 m².

Frequently asked questions
How much roof area do I need for 1 kW of solar?
Roughly 8–10 m² (about 80–100 sq ft) of shadow-free area per kW for a flush-mounted rooftop system with modern high-wattage panels. On a flat roof with tilted rows, budget more — around 12–15 m²/kW — to avoid inter-row shading.
Does the roof area have to be completely shadow-free?
The panel area should be free of shadows during peak sun hours (roughly 9 am–3 pm). Even partial shading on one module can drag down a whole string, so account for chimneys, water tanks, and nearby buildings when measuring usable area.
